Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful season!
And if you do not celebrate Christmas, I hope you enjoy the spirit and festivities of it anyway.

I love Christmas. To me it means family gatherings, good food, lots of cookies and good will towards others - more so than the rest of the year. I love how people around me are generally friendlier and happier.

Of course it also means presents, especially to my kids. And although we try to teach them the true meaning of christmas, we also shower them with toys. This christmas, my hubby showered with me toys, too. Lucky me! I got a beautiful mini ipad :)

It was an early present so I could prep it for our big trip. And while most of the apps are really for my kids, I must say it gave me the great gift of relaxation on our long trip to Australia! My kids read books, watched movies, painted great works of art, and of course, played games on this little wondrous thing :)

This is not to say that I didn't get to play with it. While my daughter decided to read a real book and my son took a little power nap, I doodled and painted a little.

Okay I still have got a lot to learn, but I must say, I love how much potential for creativity there is with an ipad. Thank you hubby!

*love* brushes app

Today, while my hubby was on a conference call,
I took the opportunity to experiment with his ipad :)

I gave the brushes app a try on it.
What was supposed to be a 20 minute experiment,
turned into a 2 hour play.

I followed the same painting principles
used in most mixed media processes.
1. Create a background
2. Add a subject (a girl, in this case)
3. Layer, layer, layer
4. Add details
5. Repeat step 4 and 5 as necessary :)

So I came up with this.

I think I'll be -layer, layer, layer-ing a bit more later.
But for now,
I have to say,
I love it.

Pros of the Brushes app:
- the way the brushes "feel"
- the layering capabilities
(unfortunately you have to shell out $2.99 for this,
but I'm a photoshop person,
I need to be able to come back to various layers,
so it was worth it for me :)
- the capability to import other pictures

I played with incorporating my daughter's photo
into the painting.

It's not the greatest photo of her.
But in this photo she stood just the right way
for my girl in the painting :)

Anyhow, this lead me into
wanting to create a calendar.

I thought of using this as the ipad's backdrop,
but of course our ipad's screen is filled with apps
and the calendar is useless.
(I don't use the ipad enough! haha!)

Painting with an iphone

It's funny how I use the iphone for everything
but the phone functionality.
I love taking photos using instagram
and editing regular photos with photo toaster
and reading news and blogs on flipboard.

Recently I have discovered sketching apps.
I must say I prefer the ipad for drawing,
because I believe real estate is important
when trying to be creative.
However, between my hubby and my son and my daughter,
I often don't even bother trying to get my hands on it.

So yesterday I gave the brushes app a try on my iphone.

I love how after experimenting with various brushes
and brush settings,
the brush strokes seem to mimic
the feel of pastels and paints.

Nothing beats real art supplies.
But if you are caught waiting for something
without a project or book in hand,
you've got to love the iphone! :)

I now yearn for a stylus.
Good thing Christmas is coming soon ;)
